Babies before the 6th month are classed as extremely premature. Such tiny babies weigh very little (between 1 and 1.5 kilos) and their vital organs cannot function on their own. They have no immune system and can't defend themselves against infections.
Babies born between the 6th and 7th month, weighing less than 2 kilos are still very premature. They are put into intensive care if they cannot breathe on their own, and fed through a tube.
Babies born between the 7th and 8th month are more 'robust' and can breathe unaided but they might still have respiratory problems. Some will be able to take breast milk and some won't. They are cared for in a neo-natal special baby care unit.
