Building the Team

As our team has come together from different courses and we have not had the opportunity before to bond, a huge part of our initial meetings was the build our teamwork and establish the tone of how our team will work. We found the following 9 simple teamwork steps which we kept in mind throuhgout the whole of this process in order to be a success team that worked well together:

  1. Make sure that the team goals are totally clear and completely understood and accepted by each team member.
  2. Make sure there is complete clarity in who is responsible for what. Do your best to avoid overlaps of authority. For example, if there is a risk that two team members will be competing for control in certain area, try to divide that area into two distinct parts and give each more complete control in one of those parts, according to those individual's strengths and personal inclinations.
  3. For issues that rely on the team consensus and commitment, involve more the whole team in the decision making process. For example, use group sessions with collective discussions of possible decision options or solution ideas. What you want to achieve here is that each team member feels his or her ownership in the final decision, solution, or idea. The more he or she feels this way, the more likely he or she is to agree with and commit to the decided line of action.
  4. Make sure there are no blocked lines of communications and you and your people stay fully informed.
  5. Build trust with your team members by spending one-on- one time in an atmosphere of openness and honesty. Be loyal to your employees, if you expect the same.
  6. Allow your office team members build trust and openness between each other in team building activities and events. Give them some opportunities of extra social time with each other in an atmosphere that encourages open communication. For example, in a group lunch on Friday.
  7. Be careful with interpersonal issues. Recognize them early and deal with them till full resolution.
  8. Never miss opportunities to empower your employees. Say thank you or show appreciation of an individual team player's work.
  9. Do not limit yourself to negative feedback. Be fare. Whenever there is an opportunity, give positive feedback as well.

Reducing the Risk of Infection at Home

Reducing The Risk of Infection

As we have been considering how we can accomodate parents and their premature babies when they bring them home from hospital. I found this information on the Tommys website to help inform new parents of the poissable risks they may face and how things that we may not consider a risk can be to premature babies.

These are some tips on how to avoid premature babies getting infections :-

  • Wash your hands with soap and water after changing nappies, preparing food or going to the toilet. You should also wash your hands often if you have a cold.
  • Ask visitors to wash their hands when they enter your home.
  • Try to restrict the number of other people who hold your baby in the early months, as far as possible.
  • In the early weeks, keep your baby away from overcrowded areas, such as shops and restaurants.
  • Try to visit public spaces such as GP surgeries or baby clinics at quiet times when your baby will come into contact with fewer people.
  • Try to avoid situations with lots of young children, such as playgroups or schools.
  • If you have pets, try to keep them away from your baby during the first few weeks.
  • At times you will have to balance practicality with the ideal situation. These tips sound straightforward, but everyone's situation is different. For example, if you have older children, it is harder to avoid playgroups or schools. If you have lots of pets, it may be difficult to prevent them from having any contact at all with your baby. Talk to the healthcare team about how far you need to go to protect your baby from infection.
As your baby gets stronger, you will need to worry about infection less.

Understanding the Scale of Premature Births

This infographic was extremely useful in helping us understand the scale of the premature birth issue and showed us how important our product will be in helping all the parents around the world.

    Understanding Our Customer

A huge factor in the success of our product is targeting the right customers. I did some research and found statistics of premature births around the world and around the UK, understanding the causes of premature births, the ages of women most likely to give birth and also the number of premature births yearly. This also helped to determine our market size.

Below are some screenshots of the websites that we found that were the most useful for the information required:

3-D heart mapping at King’s College London

What is not known is the impact that premature birth has on heart development in the weeks and months after birth and how this may affect the heart’s short and long-term function and the normal development of the brain.

Currently the most common way to assess the anatomy and function of a premature baby’s heart is through an echocardiography (a form of ultrasound scan). However neonatal echocardiography is limited in the amount of structural detail that it can provide and the reliability of its measures of heart function. Performing MRI scans of premature hearts gives a far higher level of detail and allows for techniques that can directly compare the structure and function of different babies’ hearts in a far more robust way.

To create the premature heart MRI ‘atlas’ (model of heart development with time) 50 premature babies from 23-36 weeks will be scanned – each premature baby will have two scans, the first scan within the first week of birth and the second when they were due to be born. Twenty full-term, healthy babies will also be scanned as a comparison. The data from the MRI scans will be post-processed by a method called ‘computational atlasing’ to create accurate models of the preterm heart which both visually show and quantify growth and function. This ‘computational atlasing’ technology – a new method for looking at the premature heart – will allow the comparison of premature hearts to gather information about what is ‘normal’ and what factors (e.g. sex, infection, medications) have the greatest effects on normal and abnormal heart development and function. The information gathered constructing the atlas will allow us to identify new strategies of how best to support the premature heart after birth. How the development of the heart affects the development of the brain (and likelihood of neurodisability) will also be explored.”

    Job roles and descriptions

Margins and cost target setting define
A marketing plan often includes deadlines, budgets, labor and overhead costs are measured and a desired profit is added to determine the selling price. Businesses may benefit from lowering or raising prices, depending on the needs and behaviors of customers and clients in the particular market. Finding the right pricing strategy is an important element in running a successful business.

    collection strategy

A sequence of actions - triggered by an account's status, an event, or scheduled by the user - that is embedded in collection software in order to drive collection workflow
    Assortment and item plans setting
A merchandise assortment is a collection of various quantities of styles, colors, sizes, and prices of related merchandise, usually grouped under one classification within a department. The final report of an assortment plan states the budget for each item followed by sales goals and a merchandise plan for a specific period.
    ·      unit plans and dollar plans. A unit plan refers most often to qualitative decisions or types of merchandise bought. A dollar plan is the quantitative result of the assortment planning or volume of merchandise bought.
    ·
    Prototyping

(General Engineering) one of the first units manufactured of a product, which is tested so that the design can be changed if necessary before the product is manufactured commercially
    2. a person or thing that serves as an example of a type.
    2. An original, full-scale, and usually working model of a new product or new version of an existing product.
    Sampling and product specification
The product design specification (PDS) is a listing of the critical parameters, specifications and requirements for the product you are designing. It is a statement of what the product should be and should do. The PDS is created during the problem definition activity very early in the design process. Much of the product design specification is driven by customer needs. It is intended to show what you are trying to achieve, NOT what you will end up with.http://homepages.cae.wisc.edu/~me349/lecture_notes/product_design_spec.pdf
    Sample fitting and production examples

    Define supplier selection
Supplier selection is the process by which firms identify, evaluate, and contract with suppliers. The supplier selection process deploys a tremendous amount of a firm’s fi- nancial resources. In return, firms expect significant benefits from contracting with suppliers offering high value. This article describes the typical steps of supplier selection processes: identifying suppliers, soliciting information from suppliers, setting contract terms, negoti- ating with suppliers, and evaluating suppliers. It highlights why each step is important, how the steps are interrelated, and how the resulting complexity provides fertile ground for ORMS research.
    kpi analysis example

KPIs can have various components such as volume, cost, time, customer satisfaction and quality
Key: what is ‘Key’ varies significantly from company to company. This could be the hourly rate charged against the operational hourly cost. This obviously would be key to the success or failure of a company. However, arguably customer satisfaction may or may not be vital to the success of an organisation.
Performance: can be evidently measured and quantified. For example sale performance would be a significant performance criterion, with a measurable target.
Indicator: is largely related to future performance. For example a company can hold a large amount of data relating to historical sales trends - an indicator would be used to evaluate a variance on future performance.

    Event management
Event management involves studying the intricacies of the brand, identifying the target audience, devising the event concept, planning the logistics and coordinating the technical aspects before actually launching the event.
This includes event design, audio-visual production, scriptwriting, logistics, budgeting, negotiation and, of course, client service. It is a multi-dimensional profession.

    Feedback from bliss

Message from Natalie Natalie Walton. Can you help with feedback please........

Im studying textiles at university and my current project is about making a new business and product. As my neice was born at 25 weeks I thought it would be a brilliant idea to make premature clothing that is affordable and with a wider choice of colours etc. I need some feed back to help along with my project. A few questions I wanted to ask are....
    1) what do you think to the price of premature clothes?
    2) what did you think to the access of premature clothes? Where they easy to find out shopping/ online?
    3) where the clothing sellers based in or out of the uk?
    4) what was the delivery like? Did it take long to get to you?
I hope you are able to help. Thank you for your time x

    Unlike ·  ·
    • You, Amy WaltonNicole Booth and 2 others like this.
    • Hayley Goodyear 1) prices were expensive for what you got.
      2) not easy to find! Mother are only shop I found small enough clothes. More online seen to be small companies.
      3)more in US than UK.
      4) never actually ordered online just bought from mother care. Very minimal choice!!

I think this is an amazing idea! I had a 26 weeker at 1lb7oz and when you spend so many months in hospital you get little time and pleasures with your baby. The first time I dressed my little boy it was so emotional but he only had three vests. Some prem clothes I was bought were poppers and the Velcro ones were much easier to manage when he was so small. Hope this helps. Excellent project! Will bring mums lots of joy and brighten some very difficult days  xxx
    • Rachel Allan 1, expensive for the size of material.
2, mothercare was only place I knew about for 3lb and 4lb clothes but they've stopped selling them now.
      3. UK
      4. I looked at online but to expensive. I did manage to get 2nd hand off eBay. He had a few to keep him going until he got into tiny baby size.
    • Sara Sills 1 expensive for what you got.
2 not a lot of access and not a lot of choice.
      3. Most in uk.
4 some didn't take long at all.
I had my first prem 29wks 14yrs ago and not a lot of choice then then had my second 24wks 11yrs ago again not a lot of choice and very expensive
Just had my third prem 27wks and yes there is more choice but not a great deal.
    • Jessica Hawkesley 1) expensive!
2/3) they were hard to find, managed to get a pack of 3 suits from mothercare that were small enough and that was it! Other stuff was online and not very much choice, more neonatal/incubator vests and we wanted sleep suits! Managed to find small things at tesco, but these fit him at 6 1/2lb when they were up to 5lb!
      4) never ordered from online!

I also found Velcro much better than poppers. I searched all over for things I didn't have to put over his head as this was pretty hard in an incubator! The up to 3lb suits from mothercare were really good for this, take a look at those for some inspiration! But I never found anything else that worked like them!

Hope it helps and please keep us updated on your project!!
      Xx
    • Karen Fenton 1) Extremely expensive. Money is usually very tight when you have a baby in nicu, spending £12-15 on 1 outfit or vest was a killer
      2) I only got my few bits from Boots. At the time I didn't have regular access to the internet as was living in parents accommodation, so don't know about online
      3) Boots & Mothercare in the UK. I know a lot of places start at 5-6lb but when your baby is only 2-3lb that's a bit big
      4) My answer to 2 explains this. I just bought from a shop

Moving on from th is I brought my daughter home on oxygen & she stayed on it until 12 months old. All tops, vest etc have to go over her head meaning she had to unplugged to change. Maybe things with necks that open would be good as you can pull up from the feet
    • Premfashions Baby-wear Can you add me I have got a premature baby clothes shop and maybe we could work together if ypu wanted we could put some of your designs in our shop xxx
    • Sara Rhodes That would be so helpful to parents, I work on the NNU at LGI and it is so frustrating for parents, they haven't the time to shop. We are frequently asked if we no where to get tiny clothes. Best of luck.
    • Manraj Sanghera Oohhh..!!! Im in the process of putting a line together myself! 3 sick m prem babies of my own
    • Vicky Steel Was Hegarty I purchased a small pink suit from baby direct in Horsforth, the suit was love and very cute but expensive
My mum makes small cardigans from wool left over for friends n family xx
    • Vickie Evans Expensive for what u got.
Hard to find - mum in law managed to find some in sainsburys believe it or not.
I needed a winter suit for when my son was discharged, I could only find one online but it didnt arrive until 3 days after he got home, even after paying for quick delivery. Lucky the nurses wrapped him up warm enough to get to car and finally home. Wish i knew about Premfashions Baby-wear when my Lb was finally discharged, they have gorgeous outfits for premature babies
    • Premfashions Baby-wear Awww thank you soo much xxx
    • Sara Rhodes That would be so helpful to parents, I work on the NNU at LGI and it is so frustrating for parents, they haven't the time to shop
    • Natalie Walton Thank you for your feed back guys. As im doing it as a university product it had to be abit more complex than just the clothing. So we have been looking at putting temperature readers within the clothing as temperature change/ babies keeping their tem...See More
    • Natalie Walton If anyone would like to talk direct or if you wouldn't mind answering some other questions please email me at... natalieannewalton@hotmail.co.uk
      Thanks x
    • Rosalind May Cerqua Easy to find online, delivery was not too bad. Cost for them was ridiculous! As its hardly any material at all. Mothercare did the best premmie babygrows in my opinion. Xxx
